The Akili Preparatory School pupils went on recess this week and will resume classes in January 2014. Students from Obunga and its environs are already streaming at the Akili Library to study and use computers during this school holiday period.
It has been a great year for all of us. We have made tremendous progress in educating the underprivileged girls and creating jobs for women in Obunga slum. As a Christian organization, we are dedicated to helping children and women overcome poverty and know Jesus Christ as their savior. Motivated by God’s love, we serve some of the most vulnerable girls and women in Obunga slum, Kisumu, Kenya. This being the 2nd year since we started the school in January 2012, we have seen a lot of growth in the children and teachers at the school.
This year, we have transformed the children’s lives by teaching them about Jesus Christ. The pen pals program with Freedom Christian Academy, AZ, USA will further this vision by giving the children an opportunity to share the word of God with their friends as they write and exchange letters regularly. In 2014 we hope to develop our discipleship program by focusing on the spiritual health and personal fulfillment of the teachers who will in turn disciple the children. We are grateful to Jennifer Milfs who is the 1st grade teacher at FCA for making it possible for our girls to be pen pals with her class and for offering monetary assistance to facilitate mailing of the letters.
We also made a lot of progress with our health literacy project at Akili Library. Columbus School for Girls helped us with electronic modules/lessons on malaria and sanitation which includes teacher’s guides and notes. This will go a long way in improving the health of the children and promoting the use of technology at the school. We look forward to working more with the high school girls at CSG in 2014 and transforming the lives of the children.
We will be expanding to second grade in January 2014, admitting about 110 students. We need to construct the second grade classroom before the start of 1st term in January. Pray that we will find the finances to construct and equip the classroom for the children. We are also recruiting 3 teachers in December 2013. Pray that God will provide the right teachers for our ministry.
We take this opportunity to thank all our friends who have been praying for our ministry and supporting us financially so that we can continue to transform the lives of the children living in poverty in Obunga. May God richly bless you for reaching out to the least of these.
To all our friends who will be joining our team in Kenya in 2014 to serve with us for the glory of God, we welcome you with open arms and pray that our good lord will give you health and provide all the finances and resources you need to make your trip possible and that you will enjoy serving Him here. We are always in need of volunteers to support our ministry and we welcome anyone called by God to serve with us.
We are grateful to God for the many opportunities He has provided for us, His provision and protection of the children, teachers, all our staff and supporters. We look forward to even greater opportunities in 2014 believing that it is our year. It is an honor to be used by God as vessels to transform the lives of children and women in our community. Feel free to join us on this worthy journey for the glory of God!
We are fundraising for our school at indiegogo www.igg.me/at/rileyorton until December 20th. The money raised will be used to construct classrooms, buy desks, school supplies, pay teachers and provide quality education for the girls. Prayerfully consider giving $5 or more via PayPal or Credit Card to support our ministry. Every $ makes a difference. You can also consider sponsoring a child monthly by donating $25 or more. For more info on how you can support our ministry, please contact us at email@example.com . God bless you!
